Center for Lifelong Learning

Welcome to the Center for Lifelong Learning on the Roane State Community College campus! I continue to be impressed when I speak to people and learn what they have done in their lives. Since many amazing people in our area have a wealth of knowledge and are willing to share what they know, we have formed the Center for Lifelong Learning. This is a volunteer based organization. Those with the knowledge will share what they know with the rest of us. Most programs will be appropriate for anyone interested in learning from age 9 to 99.

Our first program is offered by Pat Harrington who worked in the steel industry for decades. Pat developed a program during his career to teach his customers more about the steel they were buying and using in their products. His program, Rocks to Docks will take us through a presentation of how steel is made from the iron ore through finished sheet steel that becomes the car parts, appliance frames and things we use in our daily lives. He will tell us about the inputs used throughout the process as well as the quality assurance requirements during production to ensure the steel is made to specifications. Register for Rocks to Docks at the link provided in the body of this newsletter.

Scheduled for October 18th is a program by Richard Cook, author of Ignored Heroes of World War II: The Manhattan Project workers of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. His book is an oral history with quotes from the Manhattan Project workers who were eye-witnesses to the most important work of the 20th century. The workers were mostly young, mostly women and mostly single. Many came from the Upper Cumberland area. Look for more details and registration information in an upcoming newsletter.
