Inno Makers meeting #3 … the Run Off …
6 people attended
In our latest session, we delved into a variety of fascinating tech topics:
1. HomeKit and Power Outages:
I had a pre-meeting discussion with John regarding his HomeKit setup. We explored the issue of his lamps entering pairing mode during power outages, brainstorming potential solutions to enhance system reliability.
2. Troubleshooting an Older PC:
Robert brought in an older PC that wouldn’t boot. After some in-depth troubleshooting, we narrowed down the problem to either general system considerations or a dead CMOS battery on the motherboard.
3. Power over Ethernet (PoE) Insights:
Pat and Pete shared valuable information about their PoE setups, noting the limitations of cable length and size. Their expertise sparked an engaging discussion on optimizing PoE systems.
4. Home Automation with Home Assistant:
Pete and Ted introduced Robert to the capabilities of Home Assistant for monitoring and managing home data. Pete also shared how he leverages a Raspberry Pi 5 for his setup instead of a traditional laptop.
5. Innovative Raspberry Pi Applications:
Pete demonstrated another Raspberry Pi configured as a complete audio amplification system, achieved by integrating two additional boards. This showcased the incredible versatility of these devices.
6. LoRa and Mesh Networking:
We touched on the use of mini radios employing LoRa mesh networks for text communication, highlighting their potential in resilient communication systems. Also RTL radio scaning
7. Electrical Code Updates:
A notable update was mentioned regarding the latest electrical code, which now mandates whole-house surge protection—an important consideration for modern smart homes.
8. CBI Outreach:
Jim shared that a friend in the HVAC field is interested in 3D printing and learning more about the innovative work we do at CBI.
Our discussions were as insightful as ever, with everyone bringing their unique perspectives and knowledge to the table. Looking forward to more deep dives in future sessions!
